running a program inside the ev3 without external communication

As far I can see, we can basically connect to the robot and control it from a device (pc, phone, ...) based application. But is there any way to create an application that runs on the robot without the assistance of a device based application? how?

Not with this library. For that, use the standard LEGO desktop software that comes with the kit.

What about to compile targeting the mono runtime and running it over a BrickPi? probably with a few modification of this library it could be possible.
